Subject–Verb Agreement

1. Definition

Subject–Verb Agreement means that the verb in a sentence must agree with the subject in number and person.

In simple words:

  • If the subject is singular, the verb should be singular.
  • If the subject is plural, the verb should be plural.

2. Examples

  • She writes a letter every day. ✅
    (Singular subject she → singular verb writes)
  • They write letters every day. ✅
    (Plural subject they → plural verb write)

3. Common Rules of Subject–Verb Agreement

  • Singular subject → Singular verb: The boy runs fast.
  • Plural subject → Plural verb: The boys run fast.
  • Two subjects joined by “and” → Plural verb: Ram and Shyam are friends.
  • Two subjects joined by “or / either…or / neither…nor” → Verb agrees with nearer subject:
    • Either Ramesh or his friends are coming.
    • Either his friends or Ramesh is coming.
  • Uncountable nouns (money, milk, honesty) → Singular verb: Honesty is the best policy.
  • Indefinite pronouns (everyone, somebody, each, either, neither) → Singular verb: Everyone loves music.
